A Centering Prayer for a Pastoral Crisis

As we gather in the midst of uncertainty, we remember that while tools, technologies, and circumstances change, God remains the same.

“Be made new in the attitude of your minds… and put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.” — Ephesians 4:23–24

Take a slow breath in. Receive this breath as a gift from God. Nothing can create or sustain your life apart from God’s care.

As you breathe out, return this breath to the One who gave it. Release the urgency to solve every problem, answer every question, or control every outcome. God is already present in this moment.

Offer thanks for God’s steady presence. Thank God for remaining faithful even when the ground beneath us feels uncertain. Give thanks for the people entrusted to our care, for the gifts of wisdom and discernment, and even for the opportunity to respond faithfully in a changing world.

Now invite the Holy Spirit to guide your reflection.

As we consider this pastoral crisis, we ask for eyes to see beyond the technology itself. May we look first at the people affected—their fears, hopes, dignity, and needs. Help us remember that every decision we make is ultimately about loving God and loving our neighbors.

Release

As you exhale, release to God whatever weighs heavily on you.

• Where has fear shaped your imagination more than hope?
• Where has the pace of technological change tempted you toward anxiety instead of trust?
• Where have you felt pressure to have every answer before acting?
• Where have you mistaken efficiency for faithfulness, or innovation for wisdom?
• Where have you forgotten to listen—to God, to one another, or to those most affected by this crisis?

Place these burdens into God’s hands.

Receive

As you inhale, receive God’s grace.

Remember that God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.

Remember that wisdom begins not with certainty but with reverence for God.

Remember that the Church has faithfully navigated seasons of profound cultural and technological change before, and the Holy Spirit has never ceased leading God’s people.

Remember that our calling is not to predict every consequence, but to discern what is faithful today.

Receive the peace that comes from knowing that God’s faithfulness does not depend upon our perfection.

Continue in faith

As we prepare to continue this work together, help us put off the habits of fear, haste, and defensiveness.

Clothe us instead with humility, courage, patience, and love.

Renew our minds so that we may neither reject what is new out of fear nor embrace it without discernment. Give us wisdom to ask not simply, “What can this technology do?” but, “How can we use it in ways that reflect the character of Christ and serve the flourishing of our neighbors?”

As we enter this conversation, may we remain centered in your presence.

Let our words be marked by grace, our listening by compassion, our disagreements by charity, and our decisions by faithfulness.

We entrust this crisis, these technologies, this community, and ourselves into your care. We rest not in our expertise, but in your steadfast love.
