A Liturgy of Lament for a Divided Community

For a congregation split by a fabricated recording, viral misinformation, or a controversy where the facts can no longer be reliably established. This may be used in worship or at a called meeting, when “getting to the bottom of it” has stopped being possible and the wound is now the division itself.

Gathering words

Leader: We come together, though we no longer agree on what happened.

People: We come as one body, even in our suspicion and discord.

Leader: God does not wait for us to reach consensus before drawing near to God and one another.

People: We gather in that mercy, and ask God for more of it.

Prayer of confession

In unison:

Holy God, among us now;

Jesus Christ, the way, the truth, and the life;

Holy Spirit, who works within us and among us, and when necessary, despite us:

We confess that we have chosen sides before we sought understanding. We have doubted one another’s hearts. We have protected our certainties more than we have loved our neighbor.

Forgive us, and grant us a unity that transcends all facts and categories, rooted in your love.

Silence

If the community is in a spiritual place to do so, space may be kept for individuals to name the impact of the rupture—not to litigate the facts, but to share how the controversy has affected them.

Assurance

Leader:

Hear this good news, infused with mystery and grounded in love: God’s peace does not require our agreement. It is offered to us now, even in the middle of what remains unresolved. Jesus’ deep prayer is that we would be one. May it be so now, even if we do not feel it. May it be so in the future, in ways that feel tangible.
